The pool coping can be repaired or it can be replaced

The coping bonds the top of the pool wall to the pool deck. If the coping has some minor issues, it can be repaired where needed. If the coping has some major issues, it can all be removed and replaced. Even if its in good condition, if you desire a change, the coping can be removed and replaced. There are many pool coping styles and options.

The types of coping are contingent of the type of pool

For concrete pools, the coping is separate of the pool. It is usually brick, stone, flagstone, pre-cast concrete, or poured-in-place concrete.

For hybrid pools, the coping is typically plastic, sent from the manufacturer of the fiberglass walls. But the coping can be separate of the pool. If so, it is usually brick, stone, flagstone, pre-cast concrete, or poured-in-place concrete.

For fiberglass pools, the coping is typically built into the mold of the one-piece fiberglass shell. But the coping can be separate of the pool. If so, it is usually brick, stone, flagstone, pre-cast concrete, or poured-in-place concrete.

For vinyl liner pools, the coping is typically powder-coated aluminum or plastic, sent from the manufacturer of the (steel or polymer) walls. But the coping can be separate of the pool. If so, it is usually brick, stone, flagstone, pre-cast concrete, or poured-in-place concrete.

Coping Repairs

Regardless of the type of coping, if just a few sections of it are compromised (damaged or missing), then just these sections can be repaired or replaced, wherever required:

  • Brick coping – individual bricks can be removed and replaced.
  • Stone coping – individual stones can be removed and replaced.
  • Flagstone coping – individual flagstones can be removed and replaced.
  • Concrete coping – the damaged sections can be removed, formed, and re-poured. If there is just a chip or a small missing piece, it can be patched with a cement product. If there are cracks, they can be routed and filled-in with an approved concrete crack filler, which can be cement or caulk. And if the concrete is in good shape, but it is old and dull, or if it was just repaired, a decorative overlay can be applied over the entire coping.
  • Aluminum coping – the damages section(s) can either be patched then painted or sections can be removed and replaced.
  • Plastic coping – the damaged section(s) can either be patched then painted or sections can be removed and replaced.
Coping Replacement

Regardless of the type of coping, if most of it is compromised (damaged, de-bonding, or missing), or if you just want a new look, then all of the existing coping can be removed and it can b replaced with new coping. When all of the coping is replaced, you can likely change to type and style of coping.

Coping and Decks

There may be times when sections of the pool deck will need to be removed and replaced if you opt to replace all of the coping. Or you could remove and replace the entire deck and the coping…you can change it all.

We hope this helps.
